CAF Reveals What Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns Earned After Their Exits
Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly earned money from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) even though both clubs were knocked out of their continental competitions. The two South African teams went out in their respective CAF interclub tournaments on Friday night.
According to the report, the clubs will receive about R1.6 million following their exits. Both teams had hoped to go further and compete for continental honours, so the payment is some consolation after the disappointment.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the exit is a setback. The club has been working to rebuild its reputation and compete with some of the strongest teams in Africa. Amakhosi supporters had hoped to see the team progress, but their continental run ended earlier than expected. CAF tournaments give a squad the chance to test its quality, gain experience and attract attention beyond South Africa’s domestic leagues. With the competition over, the club must now turn to its remaining commitments and look at what needs to improve.
Mamelodi Sundowns also fell short. The Tshwane club has built a reputation as one of South Africa’s strongest sides and regularly plays at the top level of African football. They went into the competition with high expectations because of their experience and quality, so the exit will be hard for the club and its fans to accept.
Even so, the reported payment means neither club leaves the competition with nothing. Money like this can help cover the costs of taking part in continental tournaments, such as travel, accommodation and other running expenses.
The report does not say how the money is split between the two clubs. The R1.6 million should be understood as a combined figure, and it is not clear what each team will actually receive.
For now, both sides must focus on their remaining goals and aim for stronger showings in future competitions. Supporters will judge these campaigns by what happened on the pitch, whatever the payment may be.
