Not Sifuna, Kalonzo, or Matiang’i: The Only Person Who Could Bring Down Ruto in 2027 — Opinion

As political alliances continue to shift ahead of the 2027 General Election, the opposition faces a critical question: who has the strongest potential to take on President William Ruto? Although figures such as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i remain prominent in the conversation, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua appears increasingly convinced that he is best suited to lead the opposition challenge.

Gachagua has urged opposition leaders to put aside individual presidential ambitions and rally behind a single candidate. He has specifically called on Sifuna to abandon plans of pursuing the presidency and instead support a broader opposition coalition, warning that several presidential candidates could split the opposition vote and ultimately strengthen Ruto’s position.

The former Deputy President believes his political experience and influence, particularly in the Mt. Kenya region, give him an advantage in leading an opposition campaign against the incumbent. He maintains that the opposition’s best opportunity lies in forming a united coalition with one presidential candidate capable of consolidating support across the country.

However, Gachagua’s assessment is not universally accepted. Other opposition figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i, command significant political influence in various parts of Kenya and have supporters who believe they are equally capable of mounting a formidable presidential challenge.

The biggest challenge facing the opposition could therefore be reaching an agreement on who should carry the presidential flag rather than winning voter support. If the major opposition players manage to overcome their differences and unite behind one candidate, the 2027 presidential contest could turn into one of Kenya’s most closely fought elections in recent years.

For now, Gachagua’s call for a single opposition candidate has intensified the debate over who should face Ruto in 2027. Ultimately, however, it will be Kenyan voters who determine which candidate has the strongest appeal when the country heads to the ballot.
