Former Kenyan Athlete Beatrice Murugi Gives Health Update After Surgery
Former Kenyan marathoner Beatrice Murugi is recovering at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after undergoing surgery following years of health complications that disrupted her life and ended her athletics career.
Murugi’s medical struggles attracted public attention after she appealed for help to access treatment. Her situation was highlighted by local media, prompting well-wishers and government officials to intervene and help her receive specialised medical care.
The former athlete was admitted to KNH in September 2026 after receiving assistance from Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira. She had been experiencing persistent abdominal swelling and discomfort, which made it difficult for her to carry out physically demanding activities.
According to reports published in October, doctors operated on Murugi to remove a large mass that had developed in her womb. The condition had affected her mobility, leaving her unable to work normally or return to competitive running.
Her recovery has offered hope after a difficult period marked by medical expenses and financial challenges. Murugi had previously sought treatment at several health facilities, but her condition persisted despite the medication she received.
Beyond her health struggles, the former marathoner has been trying to rebuild her life and provide for her child. She has also faced difficulties securing casual jobs because of her physical condition.
Murugi’s athletics journey once took her to Japan, where she competed professionally and earned money that helped her support her family. However, injuries and subsequent health complications prevented her from continuing her career.
Despite the setbacks, she has maintained her ambition of returning to the track. She previously expressed hope of regaining her strength and representing Kenya at the 2029 World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Nairobi.
Her latest medical progress marks an important step in that journey, although her recovery will remain the immediate priority as she works towards regaining her strength.
