Families Spend the Night at Eastleigh Rubble as Loved Ones Remain Trapped

Families of people feared trapped inside the collapsed building in Nairobi’s Eastleigh have spent another night at the disaster scene, refusing to leave as rescue teams continue a painstaking search for survivors.

The multi-storey building, which was under construction along 9th Street, collapsed, leaving relatives desperate for information about loved ones who may still be buried beneath tonnes of concrete and twisted metal.

According to reports, 31 missing-person cases had been recorded at the rescue site.

For the families gathered behind the police cordon, every movement of an excavator brings a mixture of anxiety and hope.

Many have spent hours without sleep, watching emergency crews cut through reinforced concrete in an attempt to reach the lower sections of the building.

Peter Baraza, whose relative was reportedly working on the fourth floor when the structure came down, described the painful uncertainty facing the family.

Repeated attempts to reach the worker by phone had failed, leaving relatives with little option but to wait for updates from rescuers.

The family has appealed for additional heavy equipment to accelerate the operation, particularly as rescuers race against time to reach anyone who may still be alive.

A similar ordeal has confronted Abdikadir Mohammed, whose sister-in-law is believed to have been inside a shop in the basement.

Mohammed said the family had remained at the scene since the collapse, hoping that rescuers would locate her.

Hope briefly rose when rescue teams established communication with people believed to be alive in the basement.

However, that contact was later lost, with officials suggesting that the trapped individuals’ mobile phones may have run out of battery.

The silence has been particularly difficult for families who had previously heard from their relatives and knew they were alive.

Meanwhile, multi-agency rescue teams have continued working through the debris, using heavy machinery and other equipment to create access points into the collapsed structure.

Earlier rescue efforts had already resulted in survivors being pulled from the rubble, providing a glimmer of hope to those still waiting.

The tragedy has also renewed questions about construction safety and enforcement in Nairobi, with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

For the families spending the night at the scene, however, those questions can wait.

Their immediate concern is painfully simple: to see their loved ones emerge from the rubble alive.
