Beatrice Murugi: Former Kenyan Marathoner Discharged from Hospital after Long Battle with Illness
Former Kenyan marathon runner Beatrice Murugi has been discharged from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) following surgery, marking a significant development in her prolonged battle with an unexplained illness.
The news of her discharge was shared on Facebook by Peter Njenga on Saturday, October 24, 2026, prompting messages of encouragement and prayers from Kenyans who had followed her difficult journey.
Murugi’s admission to hospital followed an intervention by Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira, who helped her access medical care at KNH on Friday, October 23, 2026.
The former athlete had reportedly been struggling with a persistent medical condition that affected her ability to work and support herself. Her health difficulties were compounded by challenging living conditions and the responsibility of raising her child.
According to the report, Murugi underwent surgery that was successful. Although she has now been discharged, she is continuing her recovery at home.
Her story has drawn attention to the difficult circumstances she has faced after previously pursuing athletics in the hope of building a better life for her family.
Kenyans took to social media to celebrate the news of her discharge and wish her a smooth recovery. Martha Macharia thanked God for the development and wished Murugi a quick recovery, adding that she would continue keeping in touch.
Mercy Chepkwony also offered an encouraging message, describing Murugi’s situation as a second chance. Other well wishers, including Esther Njoroge, Esther Makau, Leah Jepchumba and Ben Karani, shared prayers and messages of hope for her recovery and return to better health.
Murugi’s struggles had previously been highlighted in a TUKO.co.ke report detailing how an injury and an unexplained medical condition disrupted her career and left her struggling financially.
During her time working in Japan, she reportedly earned a monthly salary of KSh 205,000. However, her health challenges eventually left her unable to work, depleted her savings and made it difficult to provide for her daughter.
Her discharge from KNH offers a hopeful step forward after a difficult period. As she continues recovering at home, the messages from Kenyans reflect the public’s hope that she will regain her health and find stability for herself and her child.
