Kenya Met Warns Nairobi And 30 Other Counties To Brace For Heavy Rains And Flash Floods, Details

Residents of Nairobi and 30 other counties have been told to prepare for heavy rainfall over the next seven days.

The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority said on Friday that the affected regions will receive more than 20 millimetres of rain between October 24 and October 30. Strong winds above 46 kilometres per hour are also expected.

The warning covers the Coast and Northeastern regions as well as Western Kenya and the Rift Valley. Central Kenya and the Southeastern lowlands are also included.

Counties on the list include Mombasa and Kilifi plus Kisumu and Nakuru. Others are Kiambu and Meru plus Kajiado and Machakos along with parts of Nairobi.

Residents have been urged to watch out for flash floods and poor visibility. Floodwaters can appear even in areas where it has not rained heavily especially downstream.

Kenyans were also advised to avoid sheltering under trees or near grilled windows during thunderstorms. Those in hot regions should stay hydrated.

The weatherman also predicts ocean waves higher than two metres on Sunday October 25. Fishers and mariners have been asked to exercise caution.

The warning comes as many Kenyans await the El Niño enhanced October to December rain season. It was projected to start in some areas during the second or third week of October.

However the onset has been delayed in several regions. Some parts of the country continue to experience sunny and dry weather with unusually high temperatures despite earlier forecasts.

Nairobi residents may face disruptions on roads that flood easily. Motorists should plan their journeys early and avoid risky routes where possible.
