Construction workers who survived the collapse of an 18-storey building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, have revealed the warning signs they noticed moments before the disaster.

The workers said they spotted cracks in a column inside the building, prompting them to abandon their duties and rush outside. Shortly after they escaped, the structure came crashing down. One survivor estimated that about 70 workers were inside the building when it collapsed.

He expressed concern about colleagues who had been working in the basement and others whose whereabouts were still unknown.

Another worker explained that the situation became chaotic as a thick cloud of dust covered the area.

Visibility was so poor that people struggled to see those standing nearby without using a torch.

Some workers reportedly sustained minor injuries from falling debris as they scrambled to safety.

A third survivor, who had been plastering one of the upper floors, said construction activities had been ongoing before the incident.

He added that some workers had left the site for lunch, potentially saving them from being caught in the collapse.

The building reportedly had a water tank on one of its upper floors.

However, authorities had not established the exact cause of the collapse at the time of reporting.Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Nairobi Police Commander Issa Mahmud visited the scene as emergency teams continued searching the rubble for possible survivors.

One worker disclosed that his phone, identification documents and clothes remained trapped beneath the debris.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about construction safety in Eastleigh, a busy commercial area with numerous businesses and buildings.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse and determine what caused the structure to fall.
