If A Presidential Slot Is To Be Given To Igbos, It’ll Be Turn Of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia Or Imo -Umahi

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has stated that if Nigeria’s presidency is to rotate to the Southeast and be occupied by an Igbo candidate, the opportunity should be given to one of the four states other than Anambra. He argued that Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia and Imo should be considered because the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, who hailed from Anambra State, had previously served as Nigeria’s president.

Umahi made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television, where he discussed the Southeast’s political aspirations and the possibility of producing a future Nigerian president. He maintained that consultations on an Igbo presidency should consider the interests of all five states in the region.

According to the minister, the region should examine how to build broader support for its presidential ambition rather than concentrating on a single state. He questioned whether the other Southeast states could be given the opportunity to lead the campaign for an Igbo presidency, considering Azikiwe’s historical connection to Anambra.

Umahi also argued that the Southeast should adopt a strategic approach to its presidential ambition by considering the political situation after President Bola Tinubu completes his tenure in 2031.

He said supporting the current administration and maintaining constructive relationships with other regions could strengthen the Southeast’s position when the time comes to negotiate for the presidency.

The former Ebonyi State governor emphasised that the quest for an Igbo president should be pursued through dialogue, consultation and mutual understanding.
