Governor James Orengo Threatens Legal Action If Pres Ruto Assents To Election Results Bill
Siaya Governor James Orengo has vowed to challenge the controversial Election Results Transmission Bill in court if President William Ruto assents to or enforces the proposed legislation.
Orengo made the declaration on Saturday, October 24, while addressing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) delegates in Kwale County during a meeting hosted by veteran politician Ambassador Chirau Ali Mwakwere.
In his statement, the governor expressed concern over issues affecting residents of the Coast region, including historical land injustices, economic marginalisation and youth unemployment.
He called for local communities to benefit directly from resources found in their areas, while urging the govt to strengthen devolution and ensure people have greater control over decisions affecting their lives.
Orengo also stressed the importance of opposition unity, saying political parties needed to work together to protect Constitution and preserve democratic gains.
A major focus of his address was the proposed Election Results Transmission Bill, which he strongly opposed, arguing that it threatened the electoral rights of Kenyans.
The governor said he was prepared to pursue legal and political avenues to challenge the legislation should the President move forward with it.
Orengo, who is also an Advocate of the High Court, said he would personally file a court petition to contest what he described as an unlawful attempt to undermine the people’s sovereign will.
His remarks add to the growing debate surrounding proposed changes to Kenya’s election framework and the role of political leaders in scrutinising legislation affecting electoral processes.
The meeting in Kwale also provided a platform for LDP delegates to discuss regional concerns and the party’s role in building a broader opposition alliance.
