Whooping KSh280,000 Weekly: Kenyan Man in US Reveals Truck Drivers’ Salary, Says “Hakuna Madereva”

A Kenyan content creator living in the United States has highlighted the demand for truck drivers after visiting a trailer park in Kansas City, where several trucks owned by a Kenyan businessman were reportedly sitting idle.

Fanya Mambo Kinuthia visited the facility owned by Ernest Modara, who operates a trucking business with several long-haul trailers.

During their conversation, Modara said a truck driver in the US could earn about $2,500 per week, equivalent to approximately KSh280,000.

Kinuthia explained that the weekly figure could translate to nearly KSh1.1 million over four weeks, depending on the actual earnings and exchange rate.

The amount attracted attention from Kenyans interested in employment opportunities abroad. However, actual earnings may vary depending on the employer, routes, working hours and other employment conditions.

According to Kinuthia, some of Modara’s trucks remained parked because the business lacked enough drivers to operate them.

Kinuthia urged the Kenyan government to explore ways of helping qualified Kenyan truck drivers access legitimate employment opportunities in the United States.

He called for discussions between the two governments to establish possible visa and work permit arrangements for skilled workers in the transport sector.

Kinuthia argued that such agreements could help Kenyan drivers find employment while allowing businesses facing staffing challenges to operate their vehicles.

He acknowledged the importance of creating jobs locally but said Kenyans should also be able to pursue genuine opportunities available in other countries.

However, working in the US requires the appropriate immigration status and work authorisation. The reported salary alone does not guarantee employment, and any recruitment opportunity should be verified before applicants pay fees or make travel arrangements.
