Peter Kaluma Reportedly Deletes 2022 Tweet Attacking William Ruto

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has reportedly deleted a social media post in which he accused William Ruto of benefiting from more than KSh 20 billion allegedly taken from Kenyans and called for his arrest and imprisonment at Shimo la Tewa.

The post was reportedly published on February 15, 2022, when Ruto was Deputy President and the country was approaching the August 2022 General Election.

According to the account of the deleted post, Kaluma, also known as George Peter Opondo Kaluma, made strong accusations against Ruto and demanded that he be held accountable over the alleged loss of public funds.

However, an independent copy of the original post and an authoritative record confirming its deletion could not be established from the sources reviewed. The claims about the tweet should therefore be treated with caution until further evidence is available.

The reported remarks came during a period when corruption allegations against political leaders were prominent in Kenya’s political debate ahead of the 2022 elections.

In July 2021, Citizen Digital reported on accusations by then opposition leader Raila Odinga questioning the source of money Ruto donated to churches and other groups. Odinga called for individuals suspected of corruption to face imprisonment at Shimo la Tewa. Ruto rejected the broader political attacks against him, according to contemporaneous media reports.

Kaluma had also publicly criticised Ruto before the 2022 elections. In January 2021, Nairobi Leo reported that the legislator had called for Parliament to prioritise impeachment proceedings against the then Deputy President if he did not resign.

The reported deletion of the February 2022 post does not, by itself, establish why it was removed. No verified explanation from Kaluma concerning the alleged deletion was found in the sources reviewed.

Likewise, the claim that Ruto benefited from more than KSh 20 billion remains an allegation attributed to the reported post and should not be presented as proven wrongdoing without supporting documentary evidence or official findings.

The matter highlights the importance of verifying archived social media posts and distinguishing political accusations from established facts.
