“He Came Back Quietly”: Sam Gituku Remarks on Gachagua’s Return After Months in the US
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has attracted fresh attention after returning to Kenya from the United States without the public reception that marked his previous homecoming.
Political commentator Sam Gituku reacted to the development, saying Gachagua had returned quietly this time around.
“For Gachagua to return without a word, this time round he came back quietly,” Gituku said.
Gachagua returned to Kenya on October 20, 2026, after spending nearly two months in the United States. His return became public after photographs emerged showing him at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County.
The quiet arrival differed from his previous return in August 2025, when his homecoming was marked by large crowds and violence along Mombasa Road. The latest return took place without a publicly announced airport reception.
However, Gachagua soon drew political attention after hosting Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement at his residence.
The meeting brought together politicians from different political backgrounds at a time when opposition leaders are positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The discussions have raised questions about possible cooperation between Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and leaders linked to Linda Mwananchi. However, no formal coalition agreement was announced following the meeting.
The opposition is facing growing pressure to agree on a common strategy as leaders seek to challenge President William Ruto in the next election. At the same time, different political figures are holding meetings and exploring possible alliances.
Gituku’s remarks have added to the discussion surrounding Gachagua’s return and the political meaning of his low-key arrival.
Whether the quiet return was a deliberate political decision remains unclear. What is evident is that Gachagua’s meeting with Sifuna and other leaders has placed him back at the centre of conversations about opposition unity and the 2027 race.
Do you think Gachagua’s quiet return signals a change in his political strategy ahead of the 2027 elections?
