US Diplomatic Security Boss Todd Wilcox Watches Kenya Police SPEAR Elite Unit In Action In Nairobi

Kenya Police officers under the US SPEAR unit, handpicked from local elite units, conducted a joint exercise session under the watch of Todd Wilcox, Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security Service, who has been in Nairobi.

The Kenyan police officers are members of the US Department of State Antiterrorism Assistance program, ATA, trained SPEAR – Special Program for Embassy Augmentation Response team. The unit is assigned to protect US diplomatic personnel and infrastructure, including the US Embassy in Nairobi.

The high-intensity exercise showcased the preparedness, tactical skills and coordination of the Kenyan SPEAR team, which is considered one of the most elite units protecting US interests in Africa.

Assistant Secretary Todd Wilcox, who is in charge of Diplomatic Security Service, DSS, was in Nairobi to assess security cooperation between the US and Kenya.

Wilcox watched as the Kenyan SPEAR officers executed drills including close protection, emergency response, counter-attack and evacuation procedures designed to respond to threats against the US Embassy and its staff.

The SPEAR program is a key pillar of the US Department of State’s Antiterrorism Assistance, ATA, program. Members are handpicked from Kenya’s most elite police units including Recce Company, GSU and other specialized formations. They undergo intensive training by US instructors both in Kenya and in the US.

Kenya is one of the few countries in Africa with a fully operational SPEAR team due to its strategic importance and history of terrorism threats targeting US installations, including the 1998 US Embassy bombing in Nairobi.

The unit works closely with the US Regional Security Office, RSO, at the US Embassy in Gigiri, Nairobi, and is always on standby to respond to any security incident involving US diplomats.

Security analysts say Wilcox’s presence in Nairobi underscores Washington’s confidence in Kenya’s elite security units and the deepening security partnership between Nairobi and Washington at a time when global security threats are evolving.

The US Embassy in Nairobi is one of the largest US diplomatic missions in Africa, and its security remains a top priority for both governments.
