Wicknell Chivayo: Why Opposition Leaders Across Africa Feared The Zimbabwean Billionaire

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo attracted attention across Africa because of his close relationships with powerful political figures and controversies surrounding election related contracts. His business dealings sparked concerns among opposition leaders who questioned whether politically connected individuals and companies could influence the credibility of elections.

Popularly known as Sir Wicknell, Chivayo built a reputation through his involvement in energy and infrastructure projects, extravagant displays of wealth, and public association with influential leaders, including Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Kenyan President William Ruto.

However, his political connections also placed him at the centre of scrutiny over public procurement and the supply of election materials in several African countries.

One of the most significant controversies involved the 2023 Zimbabwe general election, when a South African printing company, Ren Form, supplied election materials to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Investigations by South African organisation Open Secrets and Zimbabwean publication The NewsHawks examined alleged price inflation in the contract. Among the figures highlighted was an invoice of approximately R23 million for a central server that investigators said could ordinarily cost around R90,000.

Chivayo was linked to the controversy through his reported business relationship with Ren Form. His former business associates, Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu, also alleged that the contract was inflated. However, the allegations were disputed by the parties involved, and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission maintained that its procurement process was above board.

The controversy later attracted attention in neighbouring Namibia, where opposition parties challenged the selection of Ren Form to print ballot papers for the country’s 2024 elections. At least four political parties reportedly petitioned the Electoral Commission of Namibia, seeking to have the tender revoked because of concerns arising from reports about the Zimbabwean contract.

Chivayo denied involvement in the Namibian ballot paper contract, while Ren Form also rejected allegations linking it to him. The electoral commission defended its selection of the company.

In Zimbabwe, opposition figures also questioned the handling of investigations into the election material procurement controversy. In December 2025, the Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission announced that it had found no evidence linking Chivayo to fraudulent conduct in the ZEC procurement. The decision, however, did not end all scrutiny, with Open Secrets reporting that related financial investigations in South Africa remained active.

Chivayo’s connections to Kenyan politics brought renewed attention to his activities following allegations made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in October 2026.

Speaking to clergy in Boston, United States, Gachagua claimed that Chivayo had held more than KSh 1.5 trillion on behalf of President William Ruto and had connections to alleged plans involving election technology ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election.

Gachagua did not provide documentary evidence to substantiate those claims, and Citizen Digital reported that it could not independently verify them. The allegations therefore remain unproven and should not be treated as established facts.

Chivayo died alongside his wife and other passengers in a helicopter crash in Zimbabwe on September 30, 2026. His death renewed public interest in his business dealings and relationships with political leaders across the continent.

Ultimately, the concerns raised by opposition leaders were centred on the intersection of political influence, government contracts and electoral transparency. While the controversies surrounding Chivayo generated serious questions about procurement practices, allegations against him must be distinguished from findings established by investigators or courts.
