Ten-Man Atletico Madrid Fight Back To Earn Point Against Stuttgart

Atletico Madrid rescued a point against Stuttgart after Julian Alvarez scored his first goal of the season in a 1-1 draw, responding to an earlier setback before being reduced to 10 men in the second half.

The Argentine forward, who attracted interest from Barcelona during the summer transfer window, helped Diego Simeone’s side recover after Jamie Leweling had given the German hosts the lead in the first half.

Stuttgart started strongly and controlled much of the opening period, creating opportunities that put Atletico under pressure.

Their persistence paid off in the 36th minute when Leweling found space outside the penalty area and unleashed a low strike to beat the goalkeeper.

The Bundesliga side went into the break with a deserved advantage, having made the most of their attacking pressure while Atletico struggled to find a breakthrough.

However, the visitors needed just 80 seconds after the restart to restore parity.

Substitute Ademola Lookman, introduced at halftime, picked out Alvarez inside the penalty area, allowing the forward to sweep the ball into the net with a composed finish.

The goal marked a significant moment for Alvarez, who had yet to score this season after a summer dominated by speculation over his future.

Atletico had resisted Barcelona’s attempts to sign him, keeping the forward at the club.

Atletico appeared capable of building on the equaliser, but their task became more difficult in the 64th minute when midfielder Morten Hjulmand was sent off for a reckless challenge on Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller.

With a numerical advantage, Stuttgart increased the pressure in search of a winner.

However, Atletico defended resolutely to preserve the draw.

Stuttgart came closest to snatching victory when Jeff Chabot headed wide from Maximilian Mittelstadt’s corner, leaving the hosts frustrated after dominating large periods of the contest.
