Garnacho’s £43m Aston Villa transfer in danger as Chelsea grow frustrated over lack of playing time

According to a report by Metro on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Alejandro Garnacho’s chances of securing a permanent move to Aston Villa are reportedly under threat, with Chelsea becoming increasingly frustrated over the Argentine winger’s limited playing time under Unai Emery.

The 22-year-old joined Villa on loan from Chelsea during the summer transfer window in a deal that reportedly includes a conditional purchase option worth £43 million if he makes a specified number of appearances this season.

However, Garnacho has struggled to establish himself at Villa Park, raising concerns over whether he will meet the requirements needed to make the transfer permanent.

A permanent move was previously considered highly likely, but the situation has reportedly changed because of his limited involvement since arriving at the club.

Chelsea are said to be disappointed with the lack of opportunities Garnacho has received and fear that the loan arrangement may fail to produce the permanent transfer they had anticipated.

According to the report, the Blues are growing increasingly frustrated because they had expected the agreement to provide a clear pathway for the winger to leave Stamford Bridge permanently.

Garnacho has made four substitute appearances for Villa this season, accumulating just 42 minutes across all competitions, according to Football365. His involvement in the Premier League has been even more limited, with only 22 minutes of league action recorded.

Concerns over his situation increased after he was omitted from Villa’s squad for their 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at the weekend. His absence raised further questions about his standing in Emery’s plans and whether he would receive enough playing time to trigger the purchase clause.

Garnacho joined Villa hoping to revive his career after struggling to establish himself as a regular starter at Chelsea last season.

The former Manchester United youngster was previously regarded as one of the most promising attacking talents of his generation, but his career has faced challenges since leaving Old Trafford in the summer of 2025.

His move to Chelsea was expected to offer a fresh start, but he struggled to produce consistent performances and spent much of his debut season on the fringes of the first team.

A loan move to Villa was therefore viewed as an opportunity to secure regular football and prove his quality in a new environment. However, his limited involvement so far suggests the move has not gone according to plan.

Emery has previously encouraged Garnacho to remain patient, work hard in training and make the most of any opportunities he receives.

The Villa manager also explained that the winger was behind some of his teammates because of circumstances during pre-season, which affected his preparations for the campaign.

“Continue working. Work, work, train, work,” Emery said. “When he can have minutes to play, try to play well. He is progressing, but we have players in front of him now.”
