Sammy Gyamfi outlines plan to track Ghana’s gold from source to export

The Ghana Gold Board is preparing to introduce a blockchain-based tracking system to trace gold from its legitimate source through trading, refining and export, CEO Sammy Gyamfi has announced.

Gyamfi said a competitive tendering process for the system was underway and was expected to be completed before the end of November 2026.

Speaking at the 2026 Mining in Motion Conference, he said the system would strengthen accountability and make it easier to identify gold linked to illegal or irresponsible mining.

“The Gold Board track-and-trace system will help establish a verifiable record of gold from its legitimate source through various custody points in the aggregation network,” he said.

According to Gyamfi, the system is intended to ensure that gold refined and exported from Ghana carries evidence of its origin and demonstrates that its production and trade complied with applicable laws and responsible-sourcing standards.

He said the initiative was necessary to protect the gains made through reforms in the gold trade and improve confidence in Ghana’s gold exports.

“We are not oblivious of this responsibility because we know that it is critical to the sustainability of the gains we have chalked under this new Gold Board model,” he said.

Gyamfi stressed that mining regulation should not only focus on enforcement but also help formalise the sector and create opportunities for local businesses.

“Reform will endure only when compliance becomes a pathway to opportunity rather than hardships,” he said.

He added that the government wanted artisanal and small-scale mining to support livelihoods and generate foreign exchange while reducing environmental damage.

The planned tracking system forms part of GoldBod’s wider effort to improve oversight of gold trading and promote responsible sourcing.
