Mbali Shinga Refuses to Back Down — Vows to Take NFP Expulsion Battle to Supreme Court of Appeal
Former KwaZulu-Natal Member of the Executive Council Mbali Shinga has vowed to continue her legal fight against her expulsion from the National Freedom Party (NFP), indicating that she intends to approach the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) following a setback in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
Shinga’s latest announcement comes after the High Court dismissed her application for leave to appeal the decision concerning her expulsion from the party. The ruling dealt another blow to her efforts to challenge the NFP’s disciplinary action through the courts.
Despite the outcome, Shinga has maintained that she is not prepared to abandon the legal battle. She has expressed her intention to escalate the matter to a higher court, arguing that the dispute is not yet over.
“This case is not finished, and I am still going to fight,” Shinga reportedly stated, reaffirming her determination to challenge the party’s decision.
The dispute stems from an internal disciplinary process that resulted in Shinga being expelled from the NFP after she was found guilty of gross insubordination. The party’s action followed disagreements over political directives, including her decision in December 2025 not to support an MK Party motion of no confidence against KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli.
Instead, Shinga chose to support the Government of Provincial Unity, a move that reportedly placed her at odds with the party leadership.
The NFP has defended its disciplinary decision, while the legal proceedings have become a significant point of contention between Shinga and the party.
The latest development also comes as NFP president Ivan Barnes prepares to take up a seat in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature following the legal setbacks suffered by Shinga.
However, Shinga’s stated intention to approach the SCA does not automatically mean that an appeal has been formally lodged or that the higher court has agreed to hear the matter.
A timeline for the proposed filing has not yet been announced.
The next steps will depend on the applicable legal procedures and whether Shinga successfully pursues further judicial remedies. Until then, the dispute remains a significant development in the ongoing tensions surrounding the NFP’s internal affairs.
