Sundowns Confirm Free-Agent Signing of Lazola Maku
Mamelodi Sundowns have officially announced the signing of Amajita captain Lazola Maku, who joins the club as a free agent following his departure from Siwelele FC.
The 19-year-old defender has signed for the Betway Premiership leaders after his contract with Siwelele expired. His arrival adds another young talent to the Sundowns squad as the club continues to strengthen its team for domestic and continental competitions.
Maku had been linked with a move to Sundowns before the announcement, with the club eventually securing his services. The youngster attracted attention through his performances at youth level, where he established himself as an important player for the South African national under-20 team.
Before completing his move to Chloorkop, Maku spent several weeks in Europe on trial following his departure from Siwelele. However, he returned to South Africa to join Amajita for the COSAFA Under-20 Championship, which took place in Mozambique last month.
The defender played an important role in helping South Africa defend their COSAFA Under-20 Championship title. Amajita defeated hosts Mozambique 2-1 in the final to secure the trophy and continue their success in the regional competition.
Maku captained the national team during the tournament and was one of the most experienced players in the squad. His leadership and involvement in the team’s successful campaign further highlighted his importance to the under-20 side.
At club level, the teenager made five first-team appearances for Siwelele. He was part of the team during its transition from SuperSport United to Siwelele FC, gaining valuable experience in senior football despite his young age.
His move to Sundowns represents another step in his development as he prepares for a new challenge at one of South Africa’s biggest clubs. The Chloorkop outfit has a strong record of competing for trophies and participating in African competitions, providing Maku with an opportunity to continue improving.
Sundowns confirmed the signing on Tuesday morning, bringing an end to the speculation surrounding the future of the Amajita captain. The club will now look to integrate the young defender into its plans as he begins the next chapter of his career.
