Former Crime Intelligence head Mulangi Mphego has been granted bail in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court, where he has appeared on ammunition-related charges.

Mphego was arrested last night at his Centurion home after a raid at his home in July.

He’s accused of the unlawful possession of more than 100 rounds of police issued ammunition.

The former General was the head of Crime Intelligence between 2006 and 2008.

Former General Mphego was arrested last night at this home in Midstream Estate, more than 3 months after a search and seizure operation at his home.

The Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court has heard that several firearms, including an AK47 rifle, were found on the property, but they were all licensed.

Police, however, also found more than 100 rounds of ammunition marked with the letter “P,” showing that it was manufactured by Denel and belongs to the state.

In his first appearance today, the state did not oppose his release on bail.

Magistrate Tshifhiwa Ntoko released the former General on R5,000 bail.

This matter has been linked to the investigation into the 2021 death of former crime detection deputy national police commissioner Sindile Mfazi.
