Doctor Khumalo Says New SAFA Appointment Is About Serving South African Football

Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has spoken about his appointment as deputy chairperson of the South African Football Association (SAFA) technical committee, insisting that the position is about serving the country rather than celebrating a personal achievement.

The former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs midfield star was appointed to the role following a SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting over the weekend.

Speaking on #MSWOn947 on Monday, the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winner revealed that he had not yet received a detailed outline of his responsibilities. He also acknowledged the influence of important figures in his life, including former Kaizer Chiefs chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung, in developing his leadership abilities.

Khumalo believes his new position could contribute to improving South African football, particularly player development and coaching education.

He explained that he had not yet met technical committee chairperson Jack Maluleke to discuss the committee’s plans and expectations.

According to Khumalo, advancing football requires collective effort rather than individual recognition. He emphasised that SAFA must identify key areas requiring improvement and develop programmes that benefit the nation.

The former midfielder also expressed his desire to see more former players appointed to similar positions, arguing that their experience and coaching knowledge could help strengthen football development across the country.
