Alex Mwakideu Explains Why Praising Ruto’s Projects Doesn’t Mean He’ll Back Him in 2027
Radio presenter Alex Mwakideu has clarified his political position ahead of the 2027 General Election, insisting that he has not settled on a preferred presidential candidate despite praising development projects undertaken by President William Ruto’s administration.
Mwakideu’s remarks follow online criticism over his positive comments about the government’s affordable housing programme in Eldoret and ongoing construction along the Naivasha–Nakuru–Mau Summit Road.
Speaking on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the media personality maintained that appreciating development work did not mean he had already decided whom to support in the next presidential election.
“Right now I have no presidential candidate,” Mwakideu said, making it clear that he was still assessing the political landscape ahead of the polls.
He also briefly addressed his political interests in Nairobi, mentioning Senator and Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, alongside the Nairobi governor.
The presenter’s comments come as political alignments begin attracting attention ahead of the 2027 elections, with public figures increasingly facing scrutiny over their remarks about government projects and political leaders.
Mwakideu also reflected on his longstanding support for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, revealing that he had voted for the veteran opposition leader for years.
“To be very honest, mimi maisha yangu yote nilikua napigia Baba kura since 2002,” he said, explaining that he had supported Raila since the 2002 General Election.
He recalled how he would follow Raila’s political direction when making decisions at the ballot.
“Alikuwa ananiambia, hukuwa uniambie kitu nyingine. Akisema left. Akisema, right, right,” Mwakideu added, describing the influence the former prime minister had on his voting choices.
However, the radio host stressed that he had not yet identified a presidential candidate to support following Raila’s death in October 2025.
“I do not have a presidential candidate. I do not have a presidential candidate. Bado nangalia agalia nione kutakuwa namna gani,” he said, reiterating that he was waiting to see how the political situation develops.
His clarification follows his October 19 comments about the Pioneer Affordable Housing Project in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
After visiting or viewing the project, Mwakideu described it positively, attracting reactions from Kenyans and fellow media personalities who questioned whether the housing programme was affordable for ordinary citizens.
“Politics aside… This Affordable Housing Pioneer project was simply amazing,” he said.
Among those who criticised or questioned aspects of the project were media personality Willis Raburu and comedian MCA Tricky. Their reactions brought renewed attention to the debate over the government’s housing initiative and the cost of accessing the homes.
Mwakideu had also shared footage of construction work along the Naivasha–Nakuru–Mau Summit Road on Sunday, October 18.
In the video, he pointed out that workers were still on site, expressing satisfaction with the progress he observed.
“What’s up? What’s up? What’s up? What’s up? This is Naivasha. As you can see, Watu bado wako job,” he said.
He subsequently praised the pace of construction, saying the work was continuing well.
“It’s kazi juu ya kazi, naona kazi inaendelea fiti. Safi, safi, safi,” the presenter remarked.
Mwakideu also expressed optimism about the road project, which is expected to improve travel along the corridor connecting Naivasha, Nakuru and Mau Summit.
“I’m happy the country is under construction,” he said, adding that motorists could eventually enjoy improved journeys from Nairobi towards Naivasha, Nakuru and Mau Summit.
His positive assessment of the two projects sparked discussion about whether praising government development initiatives amounted to endorsing the administration politically.
Mwakideu’s latest remarks, however, draw a distinction between appreciating infrastructure projects and declaring allegiance to a presidential candidate.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, the presenter says he is still watching events unfold before deciding whom to support in the presidential race.
