92-Year-Old American Becomes World’s Oldest First-Time Grandfather

An American man, Normand Tousignant, has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest first-time grandfather after meeting his granddaughter at the age of 92 years and 24 days.

Tousignant achieved the record on September 22, 2022, when his granddaughter, Madison, was born. The recognition was announced by Guinness World Records on October 20, 2026, nearly four years after the milestone.

Born on August 29, 1930, Tousignant became a grandfather when his only child, Kerry, welcomed her daughter. He was six months older than the previous record holder, Charles Smith of Australia, who became a grandfather at 91 years and 209 days.

According to Guinness World Records, Tousignant was delighted when he learned that his family had secured the official recognition. The certificate was presented to him during his 96th birthday celebration in August, in a surprise organized by his family.

Kerry described the arrival of her daughter as a life-changing moment for her father, saying their relationship had revitalized him and brought renewed joy to his later years.

The family eventually relocated from the Washington, DC, suburbs to the Charlotte, North Carolina, area to live closer to one another.

Despite being hard of hearing, Tousignant has developed a close bond with Madison. They enjoy playing together, visiting playgrounds and sharing family activities. His daughter said he remains active and engaged with his young granddaughter.

Tousignant spent much of his professional life working as a clinical psychologist. He also enjoys reading, solving puzzles, attending concerts and visiting museums.

His wife, Mary Louise, worked as a reporter and editor at The Washington Post. The couple welcomed Kerry in 1990, when Tousignant was 59 years old.

The record highlights a remarkable family milestone and the lasting joy that relationships across generations can bring.
