Obi and Atiku: Their Supporters Insist That 2027 Must Be About Them Or Nothing Else β Baba-Ahmed
Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the National Chairman of the Peopleβs Redemption Party (PRP), has raised concerns about the difficulties opposition politicians may face in forming a united front before the 2027 presidential election.
During an interview with Symfoni TV on Sunday, October 17, 2026, he criticised the attitude of some supporters of Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar who believe that the next election should focus solely on their preferred candidates.
According to Baba-Ahmed, βTheir supporters insist that 2027 must be about them or nothing else.β He made the statement while examining the prospects of building a coalition to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC.
The PRP chairman suggested that such rigid positions could undermine negotiations among opposition parties. When supporters insist that their preferred candidates must lead, reaching an agreement on a common candidate and a shared political agenda becomes more difficult.
He emphasised that successful opposition cooperation would require political leaders and their followers to embrace compromise rather than allow individual ambitions to dominate discussions.
The rivalry surrounding Obi and Atiku illustrates the wider challenge of bringing together politicians with different interests, political bases and visions for leadership. Establishing common priorities and resolving disagreements over candidate selection would be essential to any effective coalition.
Baba-Ahmedβs comments underscored the need for unity and constructive negotiations among opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 general election.
