Cristiano Ronaldo Learns Punishment After Portugal Incident

According to a report by The Sun on Monday October 19, 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo has received disciplinary punishment following a controversial incident involving Portugal’s national team, creating fresh uncertainty surrounding his international future and relationship with manager Jorge Jesus during October.

The 41-year-old forward remains one of football’s most recognisable figures, having enjoyed extraordinary success throughout his career, including his influential years at Manchester United under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ronaldo joined United from Sporting CP in 2003, developing into a world-class attacker. He won three Premier League titles, lifted the Champions League trophy in 2008, and claimed his first Ballon d’Or.

His subsequent move to Real Madrid in 2009 became a world-record transfer at the time. Returning to Manchester United in 2021, Ronaldo scored 24 goals during his first season before departing following controversy surrounding his interview with Piers Morgan.

Internationally, Ronaldo captained Portugal to European Championship success in 2016 and helped the country win the inaugural Nations League competition three years later, further strengthening his remarkable legacy.

However, tensions reportedly developed between Ronaldo and Jesus during September’s international break. The forward left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on September 30 following a disagreement before the Nations League encounter against Denmark.

Ronaldo later apologised, acknowledging his responsibility as captain while admitting that trust between himself and the national team manager had deteriorated significantly.

According to Noticias ao Minuto, Portugal’s Football Federation Disciplinary Council imposed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine after determining that Ronaldo deliberately violated regulations by leaving camp without authorisation.

The suspension represents the minimum punishment available under rules allowing bans lasting between one and six months. It became effective immediately after the September incident.

Consequently, Ronaldo could return for Portugal’s November matches against Denmark and Wales, depending on Jesus’ selection decisions. Federation president Pedro Proenca is reportedly arranging discussions between both men to repair their damaged relationship.
