Julius Malema reportedly calls Fikile Mbalula after he collapsed at a briefing

EFF leader Julius Malema reportedly contacted ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula after Mbalula became emotional and collapsed during a media briefing following the Constitutional Court’s decision to reinstate 181 ANC councillor candidates for the upcoming local elections. Malema said political differences should not prevent leaders from showing concern for one another’s well-being, framing his gesture as an expression of humanity beyond party rivalry. Mbalula has since recovered, returned to work and declared himself fit.

What the post does not settle is what was said between the two men, since the post does not set out the content of their conversation or whether they discussed the court ruling. The post also does not say whether Mbalula responded publicly to Malema’s gesture. Those details matter because they would establish the nature of the contact. Without them, the account rests on Malema’s reported statement about the call and the reaction it drew.

People reacting to the post were divided, with some praising Malema for demonstrating civility across political lines and others questioning his motives and suggesting the call was a publicity gesture. Some said the moment showed that leaders could show concern for one another despite political rivalry, while others said the two parties remained opponents and that the gesture would not change the relationship between them.

What has not been settled is whether the two leaders will meet in person or whether the gesture will lead to any change in the relationship between the EFF and the ANC. The post does not establish what motivated Malema’s call beyond his own explanation. The public is waiting for more information, because the interaction has drawn mixed reactions without any further statement from either leader.
