Former Kaizer Chiefs Star George Lebese Taken to Johannesburg High Court Over R578k Luxury Car Debt

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns striker George Lebese is facing legal action after credit management company Shackleton approached the Johannesburg High Court over an alleged outstanding luxury vehicle debt of more than R578,000.

According to a report by Africa Daily, Shackleton filed court papers last week, claiming that Lebese failed to keep up with monthly instalments for a luxury saloon car originally financed through WesBank in June 2019.

The company is seeking payment of R578,004.05, along with legal costs on an attorney-and-client scale. However, the allegations have not yet been established in court.

Court documents indicate that WesBank, a division of FirstRand Bank, entered into an electronically signed instalment sale agreement with Lebese on 26 June 2019.

The agreement covered a vehicle with a cash price and associated charges that brought the total purchase consideration to R865,293.84. The amount included accessories, service and delivery charges, an initiation fee and finance charges.

Under the agreement, Lebese was required to pay a deposit of R60,000, followed by monthly instalments exceeding R12,000 over 72 months.

The first payment was due on 26 June 2019, while the final instalment was scheduled for 25 July 2025.

WesBank was entitled to retain ownership of the vehicle until all outstanding amounts had been paid in full.

However, Shackleton alleges that Lebese subsequently fell behind on his payments, resulting in the outstanding balance that is now the subject of the legal proceedings.

Lebese, who previously played for both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations contained in the court papers.

According to the report, attempts to contact him through phone calls and written questions ahead of publication were unsuccessful.

The outcome of the legal proceedings remains to be seen, with Shackleton seeking to recover the alleged outstanding amount through the Johannesburg High Court.
