Manchester City attacker Antoine Semenyo will be unavailable for Ghana’s double-header against Somalia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in November due to injury.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in matchday three and four of the AFCON qualifiers, but their preparations for the crucial encounters have suffered a major setback with Semenyo ruled out for eight weeks.
The Ghana international picked up a knee injury late in Manchester City’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Semenyo made a substitute appearance for Manchester City in the encounter, replacing Belgian-Ghanaian forward Jeremy Doku in the 77th minute before suffering the injury.
Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed the extent of the injury, revealing that the attacker could be out of action until December.
“The rest are more or less okay. The only one that will be out for probably eight weeks is Antoine,” Maresca said ahead of the club’s Champions League clash against AEK Athens.
“In the first moment we expected an even worse injury, so we were more worried.
“After yesterday’s scan we feel much better because it’s not so big like we expected.
“It could be eight weeks. Now in this moment the most important thing for him is his recovery. When he is back around December it will be like a new player in terms of energy.”
Semenyo’s absence comes as another setback for Ghana, who made a disappointing start to their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign last month, suffering defeats to Ivory Coast and The Gambia.
The Black Stars will be hoping to turn their fortunes around against Somalia as they seek to revive their qualification hopes.
Semenyo also missed Ghana’s September-October qualifying matches due to injury, meaning the team will once again have to cope without the influential attacker.
