Mahama Announces Fresh Deadline to Stop Ghana’s Raw Mineral Exports
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to end Ghana’s exports of unprocessed mineral ores by 2030 as part of a broader strategy to expand local processing, promote industrialisation and retain more economic value from the country’s natural resources.
The policy will involve a phased restriction on the export of raw minerals, including bauxite, manganese, iron and lithium, to encourage domestic processing and strengthen Ghana’s industrial capacity.
Speaking at the Mining in Motion Conference on Monday, October 19, 2026, Mahama said the government would introduce the necessary legal framework, mineral-specific requirements and clear implementation timelines to guide the policy.
He emphasised that Ghana must move away from a system centred on extracting and exporting raw minerals towards one that processes its natural resources locally to support industrial growth and economic development.
The President also indicated that investors seeking access to Ghana’s mineral resources would be required to comply with clearly defined local processing obligations as part of efforts to increase domestic value addition.
He explained that the proposed restrictions would be implemented in phases, supported by appropriate legislation and transparent timelines to ensure clarity for industry stakeholders.
Mahama further disclosed that the government had already prohibited the export of iron scrap and non-ferrous metals, describing the measure as part of its broader efforts to encourage local processing and ensure greater economic benefits from the country’s resources.
