RIP: Last Painful Words Raila Odinga Told His Wife Before He Died in India

Details have emerged on the last painful words Raila Odinga told his wife before he died in India, as his widow, Mama Ida Odinga, recalls their final conversation and the heartbreaking moment she learnt of his passing.

Speaking to Citizen TV ahead of the first anniversary of Raila’s death, Ida revealed that she had a lengthy conversation with her husband on the night before he died. They discussed ordinary matters, and nothing suggested that he was unwell.

Ida recalled that Raila had assured her that he was feeling fine.

His reassurance left her with no reason to suspect that something terrible was about to happen.

The former prime minister had travelled to Kerala, India, for what Ida described as a routine medical visit.

She said there had been no clear warning that his condition would suddenly change.

However, the following morning brought devastating news.

Raila’s sister, Dr Akina, called Ida and asked her to contact their other sister, Ruth Ayambo, who was accompanying him in India.

After failing to reach Ruth, Ida contacted her daughter, Winnie Odinga, who was also in India.

Winnie informed her mother that Raila had collapsed during a morning walk and that doctors were trying to revive him. She added that medical staff were taking him to the intensive care unit as they fought to save his life.

Ida said she was shocked by the news and waited anxiously for another update, hoping her husband would recover.

About ten minutes later, Winnie called again with heartbreaking news.

She told her mother that efforts to save Raila had failed.

When Ida asked for clarification, Winnie confirmed that her father had died.

Ida admitted that receiving the news was extremely painful and that life without her husband had not been easy.Raila’s death shocked many Kenyans who had followed his decades-long political career.

He was among the country’s most influential leaders and played a major role in Kenya’s struggle for democratic reforms.

As the family marks the first anniversary of his passing, plans are underway to honour his life at their home in Bondo, Siaya County, remembering his legacy and contribution to the country.
