“Is Ruto Bankrupt?” Gachagua Claims Cash Is Running Out as Fuel Prices Rise
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticised President William Ruto over an anticipated increase in fuel prices, accusing his administration of putting additional pressure on Kenyans already struggling with the cost of living.
In a statement shared on October 14, 2026, Gachagua claimed the president had ordered an increase of KSh 12 per litre for petrol and KSh 9 for diesel.
His remarks came as Kenyans awaited the latest review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
“This man has gone berserk,” Gachagua declared, accusing the president of facing growing public discontent during his visits across the country.
He claimed that Kenyans were demanding money from Ruto wherever he went, including in his Rift Valley backyard.
The former deputy president further alleged that the proposed fuel price increases were linked to efforts to raise money for political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.
However, he did not provide independently verified evidence to support that allegation.
The statement attracted attention because fuel prices affect transport costs, businesses and household budgets.
When petrol and diesel become more expensive, public transport operators and businesses that depend on road transport may face higher operating costs.
These pressures can also affect the prices of goods delivered across the country, making fuel reviews an important issue for ordinary consumers.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, however, pushed back against Gachagua’s claims.
According to The Star, Wandayi maintained that EPRA, rather than the president, has the legal responsibility to determine maximum retail fuel prices.
The disagreement came amid concerns over rising international petroleum costs and disruptions affecting global supply chains.
Later on October 14, EPRA announced new prices for the October–November period, with Nairobi’s maximum petrol price rising to KSh 226.96 per litre and diesel to KSh 227.76, effective October 15.
The increases confirmed that motorists would face higher pump prices, although they did not establish Gachagua’s allegation about the political motive behind them.
