Washington County man charged with murder
WASHINGTON — The man accused of shooting and killing another man in Washington County last weekend made his first court appearance this afternoon.
46-year-old Jeremy Stevens is charged with murder in the death of 41-year-old Cory Fields of Indian Island. It happened at 312 Peter Dana Point Road in Indian Township just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday night.
Judge Patrick Larson explains to Stevens, “Normally I would read you the charge. I would arraign you on the charge and I would ask you how you plea but because this is a felony charge before you can be required to come to court to answer to a felony charge, the state must first present the case to the grand jury. The grand jury reviews the charges, reviews the evidence against you and then if they find there’s enough evidence to require you to come back to court they will issue an indictment so until that happens you are not required to say anything about the charge.”
Stevens is being held without bail pending a hearing which is set for 1:00 p.m. next Monday.
