FG distributes fertilisers to 5,040 farmers in Bauchi

The Federal Government has distributed fertilisers to 5,040 farmers in Bauchi State under the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) for the 2026 cropping season.

The distribution was carried out through the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) and the Bauchi State Government.

AFAN Chairman, Yusuf Sambo, said 12,160 bags of fertiliser were provided for 3,040 registered members of the association, while the state government received 8,000 bags for distribution to 2,000 other farmers.

Each beneficiary received four bags of NPK fertiliser.

Sambo said the association had encouraged farmers who abandoned farming in 2025 due to the high cost of fertilisers to return to their farms this season.

He added that AFAN compiled and submitted farmers’ data to the fund for verification to ensure that only genuine farmers benefited from the intervention.

He said the initiative would improve agricultural productivity and strengthen food security.

The Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Moses Atsevgo, said the NADF intervention was designed to provide 20,160 bags of fertiliser to each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Atsevgo said the allocations were channelled through AFAN and state governments for distribution to farmers. He described the intervention as critical to agricultural transformation and expressed satisfaction with how beneficiaries utilised the support.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Director of the Pest Control Unit at the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme, Bashir Jahun, said the programme supported farmers through training, extension services and sensitisation.

He said farmers had been trained on proper fertiliser application, timely planting, weed control, and the identification and management of pests and diseases.

Jahun added that the programme organised weekly interactions with agricultural stakeholders to discuss current issues and give farmers opportunities to seek guidance.

He urged farmers to dry maize, millet, sorghum, cowpeas and groundnuts properly before storage to prevent spoilage, advising them to use certified protectants to preserve their grains.
