Manchester United Identify Michael Carrick’s Replacement

According to a report by Metro on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Manchester United could turn to Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler if the club decides to sack Michael Carrick following the team’s disappointing start to the new season.

Carrick was handed the permanent managerial job over the summer after his time as interim manager, but his team have struggled to produce consistent performances, raising questions about whether he is the right man to lead the Red Devils forward.

The 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night has increased the pressure on Carrick, with Manchester United now without a win in their last five matches across all competitions and having managed just two victories in their opening nine games of the campaign.

According to the report, the club have already identified Brighton manager Hurzeler as a leading candidate to replace Carrick should they decide to make a change in the dugout, suggesting that United’s hierarchy may be considering other options if results do not improve soon.

Hurzeler joined Brighton in 2024 and has made a positive impression during his time at the club, guiding the Seagulls to eighth place in the Premier League in each of his first two seasons. His work has attracted attention, making him a name Manchester United could consider as they assess their managerial options.

The 33-year-old German coach signed a new contract with Brighton earlier this summer, which could make any attempt to bring him to Old Trafford difficult, although reports suggest the club are prepared for the possibility of a wealthier team showing interest in his services.

Manchester United are still expected to give Carrick an opportunity to turn things around, but the recent results have placed his position under increasing scrutiny, especially with supporters hoping to see the team return to winning ways.
