Elections Are About Those Who Cast the Vote, Not Those Who Count or Supervise – Nana Addo

On 13 October 2026, Oman TV Ghana published a Facebook post revisiting former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo‑Addo’s controversial remarks on the role of the Electoral Commission (EC). The post, captioned “Elections are about those who cast the vote, not those who count or supervise”, drew attention to the current debate surrounding the appointment of Emelia Affi Agbenyo as Deputy EC Chairperson.

The commentary recalled that in 2023, when Dr. Peter Appiahene, a known NPP member, communicator, and TESCON patron, was appointed to the EC, critics raised concerns about partisanship. At the time, Akufo‑Addo dismissed those concerns, insisting that elections are determined by voters, not by those who count or supervise results. Oman TV’s post asked whether this principle has now “suddenly changed” in the case of Agbenyo, given the uproar over her appointment.

The tone of the post was probing and ironic, reflecting the theme of consistency and credibility in governance. By juxtaposing Akufo‑Addo’s earlier defense of Appiahene with the current controversy over Agbenyo, Oman TV highlighted the apparent double standards in political discourse. The question — “Has this principle suddenly changed?” — was designed to spark reflection on whether political actors apply rules differently depending on who benefits.

At a deeper level, this commentary underscores the fragility of trust in democratic institutions. The EC’s credibility depends not only on its constitutional mandate but also on public perception of neutrality. When appointments are seen as partisan, confidence in electoral outcomes is eroded. Oman TV’s intervention suggests that both NPP and NDC have, at different times, faced accusations of politicizing the Commission, raising fears of institutional capture.

Observers note that this debate resonates with broader concerns about political hypocrisy and selective outrage. When Appiahene was appointed, NPP supporters defended him, while critics cried foul. Now, with Agbenyo’s appointment, the roles appear reversed, with NDC defending and NPP rejecting. Oman TV’s post dramatizes this cycle, reminding citizens that democracy suffers when principles are applied inconsistently.

In conclusion, Oman TV Ghana’s post — “Elections are about those who cast the vote, not those who count or supervise” — is a sharp reminder of the need for consistency in defending democratic institutions. By revisiting Akufo‑Addo’s remarks, it challenges political actors to uphold impartiality regardless of which party is in power, reinforcing the idea that democracy thrives only when its referees are trusted to be neutral.
