Ghana secures second consecutive term on UN Human Rights Council with 173 votes

Ghana has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a second consecutive term, securing 173 votes to serve on the international body from 2027 to 2029.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the development in a post on X on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, expressing gratitude to member states for their support.

“Team Ghana keeps winning! We are grateful to UN Member States for impressively electing Ghana to the United Nations Human Rights Council (2027-2029) for the second consecutive time,” he said.

Ghana placed joint second in the election alongside Kuwait and Nepal, which also received 173 votes each.

Zambia topped the poll with 177 votes, while Nigeria secured 172 votes.

Other countries elected to the council were Jordan, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Moldova, Japan, Uruguay, Ireland, Germany, Ukraine and Burundi.

Ghana’s re-election secures another three-year mandate on the council, which is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights globally.

The renewed mandate provides Ghana with another opportunity to contribute to international discussions and initiatives aimed at advancing human rights, strengthening accountability and addressing violations across the world.
