Driver Recounts Moment He Realised His Passengers Were Armed Robbers Linked to Murder of Policeman
Ride-hailing driver Ameyaw Dankwah has recounted how he unknowingly transported two suspected armed robbers who were later arrested by the police over their alleged involvement in the killing of a police officer.
In a video circulating online, Dankwah explained that he accepted what appeared to be a routine trip request from Kwabenya to Pokuase ACP Estates without knowing the identities or alleged activities of the two male passengers.
According to him, the journey initially proceeded without any problems until the passengers instructed him to abandon the route recommended by the ride-hailing application and take an alternative road. Although he questioned their decision, he eventually followed their directions.
Dankwah said he became suspicious when he noticed another vehicle following closely behind him and repeatedly flashing its headlights shortly after the route change. Concerned about the situation, he decided to stop his vehicle, only to discover that he had encountered a police operation.
He recounted that armed police officers immediately approached his vehicle and moved to apprehend the passengers. One of the suspects allegedly attempted to flee but was pursued and arrested, while the other was also captured as the officers surrounded the car.
The driver said the officers subsequently questioned him about his relationship with the two men and how he had come to transport them. He explained that he was an ordinary ride-hailing driver who had accepted a trip through the application and had no knowledge of the passengers’ alleged criminal activities.
He was later instructed to follow the police vehicle to the station to provide additional information about the incident. During the process, an officer reportedly informed him that the two passengers were suspected members of a robbery gang allegedly connected to the killing of a police officer near the Ablekuma filling station.
According to Dankwah, he was further told that the suspected gang consisted of three individuals, one of whom had allegedly been arrested earlier near the Togo border. The two men he had transported were reportedly the remaining suspects who had been tracked down and arrested during the police operation.
Recounting the encounter, Dankwah explained that he followed the officers as instructed while trying to understand what had happened. He said he asked one of the officers for an explanation and was subsequently informed about the suspects’ alleged connection to the police officer’s death.
He added that he accompanied the officers to the entrance of the estate, where the passengers’ trip was concluded and payment was made before he eventually departed for home.
The incident has drawn attention to the possibility of ride-hailing drivers unknowingly becoming involved in police operations while carrying out their regular duties. Dankwah’s account also sheds light on the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the two suspects, although their alleged involvement in the killing remains subject to police investigations and the legal process.
