Carrick Reacts to Martínez’s Criticism of Man United Chiefs, Reveals His Next Focus

According to a report by The Punch on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has reacted to Lisandro Martínez’s criticism of the club’s leadership following their 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League.

The Argentine defender had questioned the club’s summer recruitment, arguing that the management failed to strengthen the squad sufficiently to compete with other top teams.

Martínez also defended Carrick, insisting that the manager should not bear the blame for United’s disappointing performances without examining the decisions made by the club’s hierarchy.

However, speaking after the match on Tuesday, Carrick declined to comment extensively on the defender’s remarks, explaining that he had yet to watch the interview.

“I need to find out a bit more about it before I can say if and what is going to be done. I really can’t comment any further because I haven’t seen it,” Carrick said.

The United manager also suggested that Martínez’s comments might have been influenced by the emotions surrounding the defeat.

“I haven’t seen the interview; I’ve heard about it as the interview was done, but I think it’s a little bit on the emotions of the game as well,” he explained.

Carrick added that the immediate priority was to move beyond the disappointment and prepare for their next fixture.

“There is a big game on Sunday, and it’s really important that we move forward and we stay focused on that,” he said.

Manchester United have won just two of their nine matches across all competitions this season, increasing pressure on the team’s management and recruitment strategy.

During the summer transfer window, the club spent £155 million on reinforcements, with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada overseeing the recruitment process.

Despite the poor results, Carrick insisted that he had no doubts about the players’ commitment or unity.

He acknowledged that the squad was hurting over the difficult start but maintained that the players remained determined to improve.

United now turn their attention to Sunday’s Premier League clash against Leeds United as they seek a response.
