Petrol Price Hike Exposes Tinubu’s N66 Discount Sham – Makinde Campaign
The Makinde/Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation (MDPCO) has described the Federal Government’s N60 per litre petrol discount as a “sham.”
It accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of using the temporary price reduction to deflect public anger over worsening economic hardship.
The campaign organisation said the reported increase in petrol pump prices from N1,370 to N1,410 per litre in Abuja and other parts of the country had vindicated its earlier warning that the discount was a political stunt rather than a genuine intervention to ease the burden on Nigerians.
In a statement on Monday, the Director of Communications of the MDPCO, Richard Ihediwa, said the latest price increase exposed the limitations of the government’s economic measures and reinforced concerns about the credibility of its public pronouncements.
“Nigerians will recall that our campaign had earlier cautioned that the panicky N60 discount was a mere political stunt designed to deflect mounting public anger and growing rejection of the Tinubu administration rather than a solution to the underlying causes of the hardship confronting Nigerians,” the statement said.
The organisation accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of attempting to cultivate an image of benevolence through the discount, arguing that the initiative had failed to address the underlying drivers of rising living costs.
It said no amount of government propaganda could conceal the impact of economic policies whose promised benefits were yet to reflect in the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians.

The MDPCO also criticised the administration’s repeated defence of its policies as “bold economic reforms,” arguing that the phrase had become a euphemism for shifting the burden of economic hardship onto citizens already struggling to survive.
“Our nation cannot afford to continue along a path where economic hardship is normalised, and temporary concessions are celebrated as major achievements, while the cost of living crisis takes a new level,” it said.
The campaign organisation called for a fundamental reconsideration of the policies driving the hardship, insisting that temporary interventions would remain inadequate without broader changes to the country’s economic direction.
It urged Nigerians to choose between what it described as the continuation of the present economic crisis under the Tinubu administration and an alternative focused on human welfare, economic opportunity and accountable governance.
The MDPCO said the presidential ticket of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and his running mate, Musa Daura, offered such an alternative through its reset agenda, which it said was anchored on responsible economic management, transparent resource governance and productive investment.
“Nigeria needs a complete RESET under a Makinde Presidency and not this propaganda-driven administration that has failed in all ramifications,” the statement added.
