She Deserves To Be EC Boss, Not Just Deputy — NDC Man Defends Emelia Agbenyo

NDC Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko Computer, has jumped to the defence of the newly appointed Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Emelia Agbenyo.

According to him, Emelia is not just qualified to be a Deputy Chairperson, she is even supposed to be the Commissioner because she is very much qualified.

His comment comes after President John Mahama swore in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy EC Chairpersons on Monday, October 12, 2026.

The appointment has caused heated debate. The NPP says Emelia is a known NDC loyalist and a former NDC spokesperson, so she cannot be neutral at the Electoral Commission. They have called her appointment shameful and dangerous for Ghana’s democracy.

But Rashid Tanko Computer says the critics are being unfair.

Speaking on the matter, he said there is no conflict of interest. He insisted that the President has appointed qualified people to serve the Commission and exercised his constitutional power properly.

He described both Emelia and Dr Asamoah as competent, capable and well-qualified appointees.

For him, Emelia’s CV speaks for itself. She was Deputy Director for Operations at the Ghana TVET Service, a Commissioner at the National Development Planning Commission, and has experience in inclusive economic growth, skills development and gender equality. She also has a background in technical and vocational education.

Tanko Computer argued that if the NPP could appoint people like Dr Bossman Asare who had political links in the past, then the NDC can also appoint qualified people like Emelia.

He urged Ghanaians to judge the new EC deputies by their work and performance, not by political noise.

According to him, Emelia is not just fit for deputy, she is fit to lead the EC as Commissioner, because she is very much qualified.

He says the appointments should be seen as an effort to strengthen the Electoral Commission, not as political favouritism.
