ODM Leader Oburu Oginga Expected to Leave Hospital as Party Dismisses Online Claims

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Catherine Omanyo has said party leader Oburu Oginga is recovering well in hospital and could be discharged as early as October 13 or the following day.

Omanyo made the announcement while responding to growing discussions on social media about the veteran politician’s health. She dismissed reports suggesting that his condition was worse than had been indicated, insisting that he was doing well and was expected to return home soon.

The ODM official also criticised people spreading unverified information about Oburu, accusing some social media users of using the situation to attract attention, likes and views.

She said the reports circulating online had caused unnecessary speculation about the party leader’s condition. According to Omanyo, the public should not treat unconfirmed social media claims as established facts.

Oburu’s health has attracted public attention partly because of his position as ODM leader. His absence from the commissioning ceremony for the Raila Odinga Mausoleum in Bondo, Siaya County, also prompted questions about his whereabouts.

The event brought together political leaders and other guests to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Following Oburu’s absence, discussions about his health increased online, including claims about his condition that Omanyo rejected.

The ODM Secretary General acknowledged that anyone can experience health challenges, regardless of age or public position. However, she noted that Oburu’s role in the party had made his well-being a subject of heightened public interest.

Omanyo urged social media users to handle information about people’s health responsibly, particularly when details have not been confirmed by reliable sources. She also cautioned against spreading claims about a person’s death without credible confirmation.

Her remarks were intended to reassure party supporters and members of the public that, according to the information she had provided, Oburu was recovering and was expected to leave hospital soon.

As of the report published on October 13, 2026, Omanyo had said the ODM leader could be discharged that day or the following day. The statement described an expected discharge, rather than confirming that he had already left hospital.
