Methu Casts Doubt on Opposition Unity Pledge Ahead of 2027

Kenya’s opposition faces a difficult task ahead of the 2027 General Election agreeing on one presidential candidate while accommodating ambitions, party interests and regional political bases.

The challenge surfaced on Sunday, October 11, when Nyandarua Senator John Methu questioned whether all opposition leaders would honour their commitment to back a single candidate against President William Ruto.

Speaking during a TV interview, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Secretary-General-designate cast doubt on the commitment of some figures, naming Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as leaders whose decisions could complicate the unity plan. His allegations have not been independently established.

The first obstacle is the selection process. Several leaders harbour presidential ambitions, including DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Matiang’i, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa and Edwin Sifuna. Justin Muturi has also been associated with the wider opposition camp.

Matiang’i acknowledged the difficulty, saying coalition-building is among the toughest experiences in political practice because it brings together six parties, platforms, candidates and egos. He expressed hope that the process would respect every party’s interests.

Beyond the flagbearer question lies a web of related issues. The distribution of coalition positions could further complicate talks, since leaders who back another candidate may seek influence over the running mate or the policy agenda. Parties must also agree on how campaign resources are raised, managed and shared.

Methu has proposed that each leader first consolidate their own stronghold before a joint candidate is chosen. “The easiest way to remove Ruto from power is for each united opposition principal to consolidate their political strongholds,” he said on October 12. While the idea could help build support across regions, it raises questions about how leaders will measure each other’s contribution.

Without clear rules for resolving disagreements, the negotiations could become a source of fresh divisions. The opposition must also settle what happens after a candidate is picked and supporters will need assurances that the process is fair and that losing contenders will campaign for the nominee.

Methu voiced confidence in Kalonzo, citing his support for Gachagua during the 2024 impeachment process. Yet personal trust cannot replace a clear agreement on candidate selection. The real test remains whether public pledges can become a formal arrangement.
