Full List of Newly Elected Leaders Under Council Of Governors Leadership

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has been elected vice-chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) for the 2026–2027 term, with Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki taking over as the council’s new chairperson.

The leadership changes were announced on Monday, October 12, following a full council meeting held at Mövenpick Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi, where governors reached a consensus on the new leadership.

Lusaka had reportedly expressed interest in becoming chairperson but agreed to take the deputy position following consultations with Njuki. The arrangement is seen as an effort to promote unity among county chiefs and ensure a smooth transition.

Following his election, the Bungoma governor pledged to work closely with fellow governors to strengthen devolution and protect the interests of county governments.

Njuki succeeds Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, who served two consecutive terms at the helm of the council. Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi was elected council whip, completing the three top executive positions.

The council also announced several appointments to technical committees tasked with coordinating policy matters affecting counties.

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa will head the Finance, Planning and Economic Affairs Committee, while Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir will lead the Health Committee.

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru was appointed to oversee Agriculture and Livestock Development, with Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo taking charge of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change.

Other appointments include Nandi Governor Stephen Sang for Resource Mobilisation and Partnerships, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika for Land, Housing and Urban Development, and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja for Transport, Infrastructure and Energy.

The new team assumes leadership as counties continue seeking adequate funding and improved cooperation with the national government.

Governors are expected to prioritise service delivery, healthcare, infrastructure development and the protection of devolution across Kenya’s 47 counties.
