HELB Warns Employers of Penalties Over Delayed Loan Payments
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has reminded employers across Kenya to remit student loan deductions by the 15th day of every month, warning that delays can attract financial penalties.
In a notice issued on September 14, 2026, the board urged employers to forward money deducted from employees’ salaries on time to maintain compliance with loan repayment requirements.
According to a report published by Kenyans.co.KE, HELB reiterated that employers must follow the required procedures when handling repayments for employees who previously received student loans.
Employers are required to notify the board when they hire a HELB loan beneficiary, deduct the prescribed monthly amount from the employee’s salary, and remit the money within the stipulated deadline.
These requirements apply to employers that process loan repayments through salary deductions.
HELB has provided an online employer portal through which organisations can submit employee details and monthly deduction records before completing payments.
Employers are expected to upload their remittance lists, verify the information, and generate payment slips through the portal.
The board says deductions must reach it by the 15th day of the month following the month in which the money was deducted.
Failure to comply can result in financial penalties. HELB’s published guidance states that employers who fail to remit deductions may be charged a penalty of five per cent of the unpaid repayment for each month it remains outstanding.
The board also warns that employers who fail to declare loan beneficiaries in their workforce may face additional penalties under the applicable law.
The requirements are intended to ensure that repayments are properly recorded and that money deducted from employees’ salaries reaches the board.
Employees whose salaries are subject to HELB deductions can check their loan statements through the official HELB portal to confirm whether payments have been credited to their accounts.
Employers can access the board’s official website for guidance on registration, deduction schedules, and remittance procedures.
The reminder reinforces employers’ responsibility to handle student loan deductions accurately and submit payments within the required period. Source https://web.facebook.com/share/p/19yHQhpmVU/
