Florida Sinkhole Leaves Red Corvette C7 Stranded in a Rather Unusual Position

The sports car’s left side was almost completely underwater. The water level was above both wheels and the headlamp.
According to a video posted by Bakers Towing & Emergency Service, which documented the recovery, the incident took place in Naples. How the Corvette ended up there in the first place is still entirely unknown, and the whole episode becomes even more puzzling because, as the footage makes clear, the car is facing the wrong direction.
The report was shared by GM Authority. The driver most likely climbed out through the passenger side, as the driver’s door was obstructed. Judging by the surroundings, the incident appears to have happened in a residential area.

The sinkhole is massive, taking up nearly half of the road’s total width. The muddy water reaches the lower portions of the doors, partially concealing the black wheels and the lower bodywork.
Because of the angle at which the Corvette was sitting, it had to be pulled out of the water from the right-hand side, with recovery tow lines attached to its wheels. The recovery operation went rather smoothly. The front-left daytime running light, which was submerged in the water, appeared to be flashing, suggesting that the water had interfered with the car’s onboard electronics.
As for damage, the Corvette could have suffered underbody damage given the depth of the sinkhole, and possibly even harm to the suspension or related components. The electronics, any sensors that were underwater, the brake lines, and any water that got into the interior all need to be inspected to rule out any kind of damage. The wheels also need a thorough examination in case the Corvette was being driven at speed when it crashed into the sinkhole, in which case one or more wheels could have cracked or broken.
Either way, the owner will probably have a fair bit of explaining to do to their insurance provider, although images and footage of the incident could help explain the rest.
