FG’s Petrol Discount Faces Pressure as Crude Oil Climbs Past $106

Fresh concerns over petrol prices have resurfaced as global crude oil benchmarks climbed to $106.80 per barrel, driven by renewed Middle East tensions and fears of supply disruptions.

According to a report by The Guardian on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the surge threatens to erode the relief offered by the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount, which temporarily reduces pump prices for customers using the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) mobile app.

Under the initiative, NNPCL’s retail price of N1,405 per litre is cut to N1,339 per litre, but analysts warn the benefit may be short-lived if crude prices continue rising. Brent futures gained $2.09, while U.S. WTI rose $1.93 to $93.78 per barrel, underscoring the volatility of global markets.

Adding to the uncertainty, OPEC has sharply revised its 2026 oil demand growth forecast downward by 71.4 per cent, citing slowing consumption, weaker Chinese imports, and releases from strategic reserves. However, the group expects demand to rebound in 2027.

Nigeria faces added pressure as its 2026 budget assumptions based on a $64.85 per barrel benchmark and 1.84 million bpd production contrast with current realities of about 1.5 million bpd output.

Officials, including Petroleum Minister Heineken Lokpobiri, have urged predictable policies to sustain investment and safeguard energy security amid shifting global conditions.
