ATM 2-0 MUN: Match Review And Updated UEFA Champions League Table

According to a report by BBC Sport on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Atletico Madrid defeated 10-man Manchester United 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League league phase, with Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman scoring to secure the Spanish side’s first points in the competition.

Atletico made an immediate impact at the start of the encounter, taking the lead just 53 seconds after kick-off. Alex Baena delivered a cutback into the penalty area, allowing Barrios to sweep the ball into the net despite Ayden Heaven’s attempt to prevent the goal on the line.

Manchester United struggled to contain the hosts’ early attacking pressure but gradually created opportunities to get back into the contest.

Bryan Mbeumo came close to equalising when he broke into the penalty area and saw his effort deflected narrowly wide by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The United forward threatened again after exchanging passes with Youri Tielemans, but Oblak produced another save to keep out his near-post attempt.

The Slovenian goalkeeper subsequently denied Carlos Baleba following a corner. Atletico continued to create chances, with Alejandro Grimaldo striking a free-kick against the junction of the post and crossbar.

The hosts appeared to have doubled their advantage shortly before half-time when Johnny Cardoso found the net. However, the goal was disallowed following a pitchside VAR review after Marcos Llorente was adjudged to have handled the ball during the build-up.

Atletico resumed their attacking approach after the break and nearly scored a second goal when Barrios delivered a long pass over Manchester United’s defence. Julian Alvarez connected with a volley, but his effort struck the post with goalkeeper Senne Lammens beaten.

United responded through Bruno Fernandes, who attempted to lift the ball over Oblak during a counterattack but sent his effort just wide of the target. Fernandes remained influential and later struck the crossbar with a dangerous cross-shot as Michael Carrick’s side searched for an equaliser.

However, Manchester United’s hopes suffered a major setback when Leny Yoro was sent off after a retrospective review of his challenge on Jonathan David. The defender was judged to have denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity, leaving the visitors with 10 players.

Atletico capitalised on their numerical advantage five minutes later. David’s initial effort was saved by Lammens, but the rebound fell to Lookman, who tapped the ball into an unguarded net to make it 2-0.

Carrick subsequently substituted Fernandes as United’s attention turned towards their upcoming Premier League fixture against Leeds United.

The victory extended Atletico’s impressive record to 10 wins in their last 12 Champions League group-stage and league-phase matches.
