REVEALED: What Raila Odinga Shouted Before He Collapsed and Died During a Morning Walk

Maurice Ogeta, the longtime bodyguard of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has recounted the final moments before the veteran politician collapsed and died during a morning walk in India on October 15, 2025.

Speaking during an emotional interview with KTN News, Ogeta said Raila suddenly stopped walking, uttered a faint sound resembling “Aai” or “Aih”, and fell into his arms.

According to Ogeta, the incident occurred at a treatment facility in Kerala, where Raila was receiving medical care. The two had gone for their usual morning exercise around the villa, walking along a path approximately 50 metres long.

Raila reportedly intended to complete five rounds but stopped midway through the second. Ogeta, who was standing about a metre away, asked whether he was experiencing pain in his back or leg. However, Raila did not respond.

Ogeta said the former prime minister’s eyes appeared unfocused before he suddenly lost strength and collapsed. The bodyguard described the experience as heartbreaking, recalling that he was standing close enough to catch him.

Raila was rushed by ambulance to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, a journey reportedly lasting between five and 10 minutes. Doctors immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to revive him.

Ogeta recalled being frightened by the force used during the procedure and asked Dr Lumi whether the compressions could break Raila’s ribs. The doctor reportedly explained that rib injuries can occur during CPR.

The bodyguard said he became increasingly concerned after noticing medical staff arranging a Bible, a candle and a piece of cloth near the treatment area.

According to the report, Raila arrived at the hospital without a detectable pulse or blood pressure following a cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead on October 15, 2025, aged 80.

Ogeta later broke down emotionally when Raila’s body arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport the following day. He described the former prime minister as more than an employer, saying Raila had been a mentor, close friend and father figure throughout their years together.
