No More Secrets: ODM Finally Announces This About Oburu After Facing Public Backlash — Details

ODM Secretary General Catherine Omanyo has broken her silence on reports about party leader Oburu Oginga’s health, assuring Kenyans that the veteran politician is recovering well after being unwell.

Speaking during a television interview on Monday, October 12, 2026, Omanyo dismissed reports suggesting that Oburu’s condition was getting worse. She urged the public to ignore unverified claims circulating on social media.

“He was unwell, yes, but he’s recuperating well. He’s okay,” Omanyo said.

The ODM official also defended the party leader’s absence from public events, explaining that he needed time to rest and follow medical advice.

According to Omanyo, Oburu’s absence from television screens should not be taken as proof that his health is deteriorating. She added that the public should understand the need for rest, especially for an elderly person recovering from an illness.

“It’s not a must you see the party leader every day on the screen, but he’s so alive and kicking,” she stated.

Her remarks come days after concerns about Oburu’s health attracted public attention following reports that he had received medical attention at Nairobi Hospital.

On October 6, Oburu’s secretariat also dismissed reports circulating online about his condition, saying he was safe and in good spirits. The office explained that he was following doctors’ instructions to rest and limit physical engagements.

President William Ruto also addressed the issue during the handover of the late Raila Odinga’s mausoleum in Bondo on October 7. He assured residents that Oburu remained the ODM party leader despite attending to medical matters.

The latest update comes at a time when ODM is dealing with important political questions ahead of the 2027 General Election, including its future leadership and possible political alliances.

Oburu’s health has therefore remained a subject of public interest, given his position in the party.

Omanyo has urged Kenyans to show compassion and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports as the Siaya senator continues his recovery.

Do you think political leaders should provide more regular updates when their health becomes a public concern?
