“Ndio Hawa”: Gachagua’s Camp Names Two Opposition Leaders Allegedly Working for Ruto Ahead of 2027
Fresh divisions have emerged within Kenya’s United Opposition after Nyandarua Senator John Methu questioned the loyalty of two prominent leaders ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Methu, who serves as the Secretary General of Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), named former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as leaders whose political plans could affect the opposition’s unity.
Speaking during a Citizen TV interview on Sunday, October 11, Methu alleged that President William Ruto could be using Nyoro to weaken the opposition from within. He also claimed that he had received a similar offer from the President.
Methu questioned Nyoro’s decision to form a political party, arguing that it contradicted what the MP had previously told him about the role of political parties in the opposition.
He suggested that Nyoro could feature among people he described as opposition moles. However, he did not provide public evidence to establish that Nyoro was working with Ruto, and the allegation remains unproven.
Methu also raised questions about Matiang’i because of his close political relationship with Nyoro. He said he was no longer certain about Matiang’i’s position, although he stopped short of presenting evidence that the former Cabinet secretary was working against the opposition.
The claims come days after Gachagua warned that some opposition leaders could walk away if they failed to secure the coalition’s presidential ticket for the 2027 polls.
Despite the concerns, Methu expressed confidence in Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, praising him for standing with Gachagua during the 2024 impeachment process.
Meanwhile, Matiang’i and Nyoro have maintained that they belong to the wider opposition and will support whoever is selected as its joint presidential candidate.
The latest developments come as opposition parties continue discussions over how to unite behind one candidate to challenge Ruto in 2027. Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni has also raised concerns about the party’s position within the Ukombozi Alliance.
Do you think the United Opposition can remain united and agree on one presidential candidate ahead of 2027?
